Gloucestershire Junior Championships
We hosted our first imperial round of the outdoor season (yes all the other events have been metric and that is the way the future is looking!). This event was on behalf of the County with just over 50 entries which was up on previous years however the clubs involved reflected the make-up of last weekend’s victorious inter-counties team which won by a massive margin. Just Cleve and Deer Park making up the team. The standard was high and a couple of National Records were broken, however with such a spread of categories competition for medals was not where we would like it to be.
That said, the professionalism of the judges and the organisers certain was, likewise for the great friendly environment created by the archers, coaches and parents.
There were certainly some extremes of weather to contend with, and when it rained it was torrential, luckily the predicted thunder and lightning did not kick off until literally 10 mins after we finished!
Highlights from the 18 out of 21 individual titles our members won were a National Record for Holly Clifford shooting the under 18 Ladies Western Compound Round, narrowly beating Ella Gibson who also beat the existing National Record!
Chloe A’Bear, Riley Spencer-Nice and Ethan Woodward, who was shooting his first formal competition, recording an excellent score, won the Team award for Deer Park and Emily Kaloo and Tobey Reece both won best novices.
Riley became Boys under 18 recurve champion shooting two age groups above his age, Emily Kaloo, shooting her first competition recorded a six gold end and an excellent score. Katy Reece, also a first timer, recorded an excellent 686 shooting recurve. Lily Clifford and Ryan Faulkner both shooting compound also performed well.
Will Hardy, Ella Shield and Anna Perkins all from Cleve Archers and also members of the county team all won county titles and shot well.
The performance of the day, delivering a master class of longbow shooting was Rosie Elliott from Chantry Bowmen of Rotherham, scoring 780 with 62 golds and smashing the National Record.
Lots of entries but from not enough clubs.
In summary, this was a great day but from a wider perspective looking at the overall support from most of the county clubs it was again disappointing. We certainly need to find ways of engaging more juniors in competition if our sport is going to continue to grow.

Record Status Portsmouth – Sunday 24th September at Balcarras.
Although we have all been enjoying the recent weather, and thoughts of the indoor season haven’t even begun to formulate yet, we are putting on a UK Record Status Portsmouth at Balcarras School on Sunday 24th September 2017.
You may think that is crazily early, and you’d be right, but it will also help some of our juniors with their efforts in achieving selection scores to represent England at the Junior National Indoor Championships in early December.
As with all our competitions, further information and entry is available via the Deer Park website.

Public thank you!
Like most clubs we rely on our fantastic volunteers, have completed a series of British and World Record Status events at our ground we would like to thank all our volunteers from, organisers, field & catering teams, general helpers to our great team of Gloucestershire Judges! It is not just those visible on the day, range preparation, boss maintenance, stand manufacture and all the other necessary activities combine to make all these activities possible!
Two famous quotes sum up our gratitude!
Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart!

Sport England Video Visit – Sunday 8th October
Following our successful ClubMark Re-accreditation Club Matters/Sport England have been sufficiently impressed with the way we all help to run our club that they have asked to come along to a practice session, do some filming, conduct a few interviews and produce a video to go on the Sport England website!
252 Challenge
This summer’s programme has been an amazing success and we are investing £500 in purchasing progress badges to recognise our member’s achievements now and in forthcoming outdoor seasons.
We are also launching a similar programme to run throughout the winter and are entering 3 separate external winter leagues to encourage competition and support development.
Archery GB announce World Youth Championships Squad
The squad for the Junior World Championships taking place in Rosario Argentina in October has been formally announced. We have 3 members selected, which is a fantastic achievement. In an extract from the formal announcement; ‘A highly experienced team that includes the European Champion Lucy Mason, who along with Layla Annison and Hollie Smith hold the Cadet Women’s team World Record. Also attending will be the 2015 triple World Medallist James Howse.’ Their trip will be extended as they will also be representing the Senior Team in the World Championships taking place later that month in Mexico!
Phoebe Pine has also been selected beating off a challenge from our own Ella Gibson at the selection shoot by the narrowest of margins!
Phoebe has already been selected to represent GB in the World Para Championships in Beijing China and is competing this week.
As a club we have a host of young archers that will be inspired by these achievements, we wish them all the best. Good luck to James, Lucy and Phoebe.
New Junior Representatives
We are pleased to say that we have 4 new junior reps! The junior reps are responsible for feeding back any ideas to the committee, organising junior only shoots, junior socials and much more!
The newly appointed Junior Reps have already planned a Field Course Archery session for juniors only. It will be on Sunday 17 September after the morning session at noon until 3pm. Before the start they have arranged a picnic. The main field course will be open with 3D & 2D targets out. It will be a great opportunity for all juniors to get together socially.
2017 Gloucestershire Sports Media Awards
We are eagerly awaiting to see if we have been shortlisted in 4 categories: Community Club of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, Young Performer of the Year and Disability Sports Performer of the Year. To get any finalist in this prestigious event will be a real achievement, the awards night is at the Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse on 9th November.
Beginners & Improvers Courses
Following our very successful Open Community Shoots, our beginners courses have filled up. This week sees the start of beginners courses for 30 lucky individuals, feedback from the coaches was very positive, as most had attended some of the community sessions during the summer, where they had been well taught, development was rapid and much easier. The system is working well for everyone!
The Improvers course is also fully subscribed and starts this week.
