James: A Journey of Resilience and Dedication
James’s story is one of remarkable resilience and unwavering dedication. A stroke survivor, James has excelled in archery and various other sports, overcoming significant physical challenges along the way.
Archery Journey
James began his archery journey as a mouth archer, quickly dispelling concerns about potential limitations with his determination. Transitioning from mouth archery to barebow and recurve techniques, James faced setbacks but remained committed. His dedication led to milestones like shooting a personal best at the Inclusion tournament.
Transitioning to standing classification brought new challenges, necessitating a shift to the compound bow, which has been crucial for his progress. James actively engages with the community of wheelchair and disabled archers, underscoring his commitment to personal growth and community contribution. Now supported by the Worshipful Company of Fletchers.
Other Sporting Interests
James also plays short mat bowls with Deer Park Archers and walking football with Abbeymead Rovers. Before his stroke, he played football, cricket, and tennis. Post-stroke, he joined the walking football team and was part of the ‘We are Unbeatable’ National team, which met via Zoom during COVID-19.
James is a founder member of the PIRATES at Abbeymead Rovers, growing the group from 6 to 30 members. Recently, his team secured second place at a national competition at St George’s Park. His story is used by Stuart Langworthy, England Over 60 Football Manager, to inspire new walking football groups globally. This year, James is a finalist for the BBC Make a Difference Bravery Award.
Conclusion
James’s journey exemplifies resilience, dedication, and excellence. His achievements in archery and other sports, alongside his community involvement, make him an inspiring figure, proving that with determination and support, remarkable progress is possible.
