Our all junior team secured a 13 – 8 victory over Norton Archers to win the first National inter-club competition, which hopefully will become a major annual event with many more teams competing in 2014.
Our opponents in the final were from Stockton-on-Tees and members of the Northern Counties Archery Association, brought lots of support and are clearly a very progressive club, having recently won a number of local and national awards.
The competition uses a Ryder Cup format with the first round (shooting at 50m) being a 2 dozen whole team event, the second round is a pairs competition with the compounds shooting against each other and likewise the recurves. The third round is individual head to head and the competition lasts for around 2 ½ hours.
Predominantly an outdoor competition we were fortunate enough to use the indoor range at Archery GB’s Performance Unit facility at Lilleshall.
We got off to a flying start winning the team and both pairs matches giving us a 6 – 3 lead going into the individual matches, where there were victories for Beckie, Tom & Liza. James lost his match by just 4 points, having forgot to shoot an arrow on one of the ends, Liza’s match was very closely fought winning by just a single point!
It seems some time ago that we recorded a 14 – 7 victory away to Frome Town Archers in the semi-final again with an all junior team of Lucy, Chloe, Tom & James.
Our experience of this completion was an excellent one, great fun, an exciting format, some pressure, a chance to get to know other clubs and this combination should ensure it becomes a much bigger event in 2014!
We would like to record our thanks to Archery GB for a great experience and look forward to entering a number of teams next year, the trophy will take pride of place in our ‘new club house’ and the prize money will go towards the purchase of the land!
ClubMark Renewal Application
Steph took the opportunity to ‘present’ Arran Coggan with our ClubMark Folder, as you can see a considerable amount of work has been invested in preparing our application. A big thank you to Steph who has pulled this all together.
Sport England Photo Library
Members may recall that a Sport England Photographer visited us in the summer to capture the spirit of archery and add them to their library as a resource for anyone wanting quality pictures. We picked up a disk on the weekend with the high definition photos, they are great and we will certainly be using them at the Awards Evening and in our Club Calendar!
